Boa Deep C
When you’re in the HVAC business, you are typically ready for new and different scenarios. This particular job was no exception. We were called out by Boa Marine Offshore to investigate the possibility of installing a ductless mini-split HVAC system for one particular room on the ship. After a brief discussion about the general job, we set up an appointment to investigate further and coordinate with their team about executing this project.
The Problem
This specific room we were cooling down was not large, but it created more than its fair share of heat through various piping and equipment nearby. Although this was a bit above my understanding, it’s our job at Mission AC to recognize a room in need of air conditioning. Our team was happy to help the crew with this problem.
Installation Obstacles
What we found was not a typical installation! Some specific impeding factors throughout this installation were:
- Condensation
- Rejecting heat properly through the condenser
- Having a route for the copper line set to travel
- Mounting and securing both the indoor and outdoor units in a “seaworthy”
Despite these initial obstacles, we found solutions to all of them by working closely with the team on board. In the process, it became increasingly apparent that the men and women on board were anxious for the relief of cool, conditioned air.
Finding a Solution
To combat the tremendous heat, we installed a 30,000 BTU LG heat pump mini-split. We chose this specific unit for both its cooling capacity and its ability to switch to heating if needed. Additionally, the system is highly efficient, with a SEER rating of 18. At 18 SEER, the unit will use much less energy than a baseline 13 SEER. Because the system will likely work around the clock, high energy efficiency is more of a necessity than anything else.
