Early this summer, Houston experienced unprecedented rain in a very short period. Flash floods hit pocketed areas west of downtown, and places like Meyerland & Bellaire were hit the hardest. Unfortunately, many of our customers were flooded out of their homes. Some houses took on as much as four feet of water inside. In the days that followed, Meyerland looked more like a war zone than a neighborhood, with mountains of damaged belonging piled up in yards.
This flooding also translated to a jump in HVAC repairs & replacements because so many AC units were flooded. Luckily, Mission AC & Plumbing is here to help. Let’s take a look at a unit replacement we did after the flooding.
The Installation
The “before” picture below shows the old, flooded unit, which has surprisingly lasted a long time. This old condenser lived a good life but sat underneath a few feet of water for quite some time during the recent flooding. It was clearly time for an upgrade. Our customer opted for Trane’s XR14 model, a single-stage AC condenser, along with a new evaporator coil.

Increasing Home Efficiency With a New AC
The below picture is of the old indoor evaporator coil. As you can see, it’s impacted by dust and fur, which builds up over time and makes the AC work harder and harder. HVAC systems are all about the relocation of heat, cooling and heating by removing or adding heat. When the system is covered up by dirt and fur, the process of moving heat becomes more and more difficult. This increases the effort your HVAC system must put in to do its job and can even cause a system to fail prematurely.
This proves the need for AC systems to be regularly cleaned and maintained in order to improve performance and lower the likelihood of repairs. Further, changing the air filter regularly will also go a long way toward prevention.
