Common HVAC Equipment Buying Questions:

Should I keep my system operating on r22 refrigerant?

R-22 refrigerant production will be eliminated by 2020.  Installing new R22 equipment is NOT advisable because the equipment will not be repairable (ie. easily or cheaply) during its functional mechanical life. If major components of your HVAC system must be replace it is best to convert to the newest refrigerant type.

Why should I replace my existing heating and air conditioning system?

All machines fail at some point.  If you elect to replace your ac unit before it fails entirely then you have more control over the buying process.   Having the time to think clearly when your not rushed into a decision is beneficial toward making a fully informed decision, timing to make the most of manufacturer/municipal rebates, and not having to endure waiting for an installation to occur in the heat of summer.

Which air conditioners are the most energy efficient?

All modern air conditioners are more efficient than older ones.  HVAC system efficiency is measured in SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating). The higher the SEER the more efficient (lower utility bills) the ac unit will be.  Minimum efficiency in the South Region (texas included) is 14 SEER.  Equipment is also available in excess of 20 SEER.

How long can I expect my new ac system to last?

The best air conditioners can last as long as 15 years (sometimes more) if they're properly maintained, but average air conditioners are expected to develop problems after 7-10 years. Mission Air Conditioning carries units with warranties reaching up to 12 years in parts and labor.

Can I have a larger AC unit installed?

HVAC systems should be sized according to the Load Demand of the home.  Heat Load is contingent on all of the home's construction materials.   The focus for purchasing an AC system should be on purchasing the "correct" size for the home.  Bumping up could be the right size HOWEVER oversizing equipment can create humid and uncomfortable environment while using more energy.  All variables must be taken into account before purchasing equipment that may not be appropriate for the house.

Do I need new ductwork?

Several considerations should be taken into account.  Is your system moving the correct amount of airflow based on it's size?  What materials are your current duct system made of?  Traditional insulated hard pipe has leak rates around ~30%.  This means that the system is losing efficiency and cooling/heating capacity. Upgrading ductwork that is properly insulated and designed will make for a more comfortable living environment while increasing the efficiency of your ac system.
